Our progressive reading comprehension programmes ensure that every student is first of all, able to decode all letters and words in a text. Once students are able to do this, they must then, be able to understand what they read and get meaning of the texts they read. To this end, we have published our own reading comprehension books and combine these with other reading comprehension schemes selected by our Reading and Writing Expert Teacher.
Our reading comprehension texts, support students to develop the skills needed to independently gain meaning from texts they encounter in and out of school. The texts are cross-curricular and enable students to cover and reinforce their learning in other subjects areas from school. Through reading comprehension texts, we cover most subjects of the National Curriculum.
The texts cover areas like:
Geography: Extreme weather – Storms, Tornadoes, Knowledge of place e.g. countries and continents, Climate and Change, etc
History: Historical figures e.g. Winston Church, William Shakespeare, Slavery, religions, etc
Science: Living things, Parts of the human body and their functions, Ecosystems, Hydraulic circle Earth Sciences, Matter, etc.
Mathematics: exposition of areas like: working out fractions of quantities, graphs, patterns, etc.
Social Study: Charities, Government and governance, etc.
We use art work as stimulus for creative writing in different text genre. Students can explore social issues through persuasive writing to those in authority. They use photographs and paintings to learn about different people and places and about past events and how people lived. They record their learning through creative writing.
